National Tsinghua University and MediaTek Technology Co., Ltd. announced the establishment of the university-level MediaTek-National Tsinghua University Innovation Research Center to jointly develop the "engine" of new-generation smart mobile devices-key software and hardware technologies for application processors. Combined with MediaTek's world-leading IC design technology and resources, and Tsinghua University's first-class faculty and environment, this expanded cooperation is expected to cultivate more professionals with forward-looking system design capabilities in China.
Professor Jin Zhongda, director of the Media and Technology Department of MediaTek-National Tsinghua University Innovation Research Center, said, "Smart mobile devices have been extended from mobile phones to various wearable and smart connected devices. They are also an important part of future 5G mobile communication systems. Just like the engine is a car The source of power, the application processor is the source of the computing power of smart mobile devices. " In the face of world-class competition in the application processor market, industry-academia work together to develop a new generation of application processors, computer and communication systems, applications and system programs, which will help improve the competitiveness of Taiwan's IC design industry on the international stage.
MediaTek set up a "Forward-looking Embedded System Design Lab" at Tsinghua University in 2008. In the past five years, the laboratory has achieved outstanding results in research and teaching, and has developed many innovative technologies, such as tools for measuring the power consumption and performance of mobile phone apps, embedded system virtualization and simulation technologies, optimized design of mobile phone graphics chips and software, Technology that can automatically learn user behaviors and situations to accelerate the opening of mobile apps, a low-cost photoacoustic microscope system completed with the world's first Blu-ray disc read-write head, and a chip that can measure heartbeats at a distance of several meters (see the case for details) Outcome) etc.
Students who plan to participate in the embedded system design competitions of universities and colleges across the country have repeatedly performed well, and carry out forward-looking system design. Many of the students trained can be immediately employed by the industry. In order to continue the past research results and expand the field of cooperation with Tsinghua University, the two sides set up the "MediaTek-National Tsinghua University Innovation Research Center" in March this year, and set up a research team and research plan by jointly sending staff. Draw and cultivate talents. It is hoped that the research and development energy of the academic world can be fully combined with the industry, and also allow students to understand the industry's thinking and needs in advance, so as to cultivate competitive high-level talents.
Professor Tsinghua University Vice President Wu Chengwen said, "Tsinghua University has established a long-term and close relationship with MediaTek. Through this cooperation, Tsinghua University can develop many innovative research results, and also cultivate many outstanding talents to assist Domestic enterprise innovation research and development. The establishment of this university-level innovation research center shows that the cooperation relationship between the two sides has taken it to the next level. We look forward to the two parties working together to build forward-looking key technologies and jointly cultivate a new generation of technology leaders. "
Zhou Yujun, Deputy General Manager and Chief Technology Officer of MediaTek, said: "Tsinghua University's outstanding talents are an indispensable partner for MediaTek to strengthen its forward-looking technology research and development capabilities and high-tech talent training programs. In the face of world-class competition, MediaTek needs the school's deep R & D energy injection to develop key technologies and establish a complete patent layout with us. This is a start to look forward to, and we expect more technological innovation on both sides in the near future. "
Gao Xuewu, General Manager of Human Capital Department of MediaTek also pointed out: "MediaTek has more than 20 strongholds around the world, located in mainland China, Europe, the United States and other Asian countries. Innovation platform, especially Taiwan is now the main force of R & D of MediaTek. We keep the most important core of technology in Taiwan, and we are also actively seeking and training the most outstanding talents and partners here. MediaTek has been established since 1997. Tsinghua University The university has always been one of our most important talent sources, and we look forward to more outstanding students from Tsinghua University willing to join MediaTek in the future to jointly change our future world. Tsinghua University MediaTek's Embedded System Lab proposes the world's first "expandable ultra-wideband sampling radar" with high immunity and noise immunity. A single radar unit can achieve a range scanning accuracy of 1 mm at 15 meters.
Compared with traditional ultra-wideband radar, this architecture breaks the detection distance limit, combines the antenna array to achieve multi-directional detection, and is equipped with back-end signal processing to effectively achieve positioning and object dynamic characteristics (such as breathing) detection. .
Lab member Gao Xianxian said that this type of radar can be widely used in non-contact human respiratory heartbeat detection in biomedicine. In the future, it is expected that it can be combined with mobile phones to use APP applications and cloud systems to help elderly people achieve long-term care and infants and young children. Home care, and provide doctors with real-time patient physiological information.

The booming development of smart phones is inseparable from the lives of modern people, especially the apps with various functions in mobile phones are an indispensable part to assist modern people's lives. Due to the limitation of the size of the mobile phone, the hardware performance is not better than that of the computer, which affects the smoothness of the use of the App, especially when the App needs to read a large amount of data, and the loading time is the most obvious.
Lab members said that related research found that users have specific App usage habits. For example, near noon, when someone likes to use food query apps, when they are in the office, they will frequently open the Email App to check emails. . And now there are many sensors on the mobile phones, such as: GPS, three-axis accelerator to help us get this information. After we have these data, we can use these conditions to predict which apps users will use in the next few minutes, so open them first to improve the smoothness of mobile phone use.
Therefore, the laboratory proposes an optimized system architecture that can open the app that the user may start next in the background of the mobile phone in advance, so that the user can switch between different apps more smoothly

Traditional microscope testing requires the cells to be stained, and then the doctors observe the shape of the blood cells one by one. The laboratory pioneered the use of a Blu-ray disc read-write head photoacoustic microscope, which can quickly perform blood tests without time-consuming and laborious staining. High optical absorption contrast can provide clear three-dimensional shape of blood cells, provide doctors with auxiliary cases beforehand, and improve efficiency. And this research and development has also won the first place in the 10th National Innovation Award Student Group.
In terms of price, unlike traditional photoacoustic microscopes that use large or expensive lasers, the excitation light source used in this study is a commercial Blu-ray disc read-write head, with a cost difference of about 100 times. This light source makes the system architecture lightweight, portable, and excellent Capacitive, high-speed angiography and high-throughput screening potential. This innovation can develop new kinetic energy for China's optical disc drive industry, and expand the Blu-ray disc player watching movies into portable diagnostic medical equipment, which will be widely used in biomedical applications in the future.
